Lady with Unicorn: A Mon Seul Desir

The last of the series of Lady and Unicorn tapestries from Cluny representing the senses.  The text on the tent means “To My One Desire”.  The lady is placing a jeweled collar which she wears in the other tapestries into a casket held by her maidservant.  This may represent a refusal of temptation or the renunciation of the sensual life illustrated in the other tapestries.  The lady’s lapdog sits on a cushion on a bench, and a monkey is at her feet.  A lion and unicorn hold open the flaps of the tent and carry lances with banners at the tips. The millefleur background includes many kinds of flowers, with rabbits, hounds, a goat, and a lamb, and a flying hawk and crane.  The trees are an oak, holly, orange, and possibly an imaginary species. (This pattern is solidly stitched.)
